Xperia Z3 Compact_23.0.1.A.5.77The Sony Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact has a new software update around the corner, as a new build number has just been certified by the PTCRB. Currently, these handsets are currently running version number 23.0.A.2.105, but the new update would move this to build number 23.0.1.A.5.77. Given the change in build number, this could be more than just a bug-fix. However, it may be a carrier update. We’ll let you know if and when it starts rolling.

Xperia E1_20.1.A.2.14A new firmware update for the Xperia E1 (D2004, D2005) has been certified by the PTCRB. It is a very small update moving the build number from 20.1.A.2.13 (which brought improved camera stability) to version 20.1.A.2.14. Given the incremental change in build number, expect this to be a bug-fix update only.

LollipopWhilst we await any firm details on Sony’s Android 5.0 Lollipop firmware update, it looks like at least we know what the firmware build number will look like. gbil from XDA has a great track record of upcoming updates on Sony Xperia devices and earlier today he revealed that Lollipop testing has begun on the Xperia Z3.

In particular he referenced “Sony/D6603/D6603:5.0/23.1.X.X.XXX“. This shows that the firmware build number for Xperia Z3 devices will move from 23.0.1.X.X.XX (Android 4.4.4 KitKat) to 23.1.X.X.XXX (Android 5.0 Lollipop). We’ll bring you any other details as soon as we have them.

Update: Looks like one of the initial Android Lollipop test versions for the Xperia Z3 (D6603) has build number 23.1.A.0.75. [Thanks Ben!]

Update 2: Here’s another one for the Xperia Z3 (D6603): Build 23.1.A.0.99 [Thanks Aaron!]

Updated 3: …and another one. This time it is for the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact with build number 23.1.A.0.131.

2hntm6vSony has released a new software update for the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact that moves the build number from version 23.0.A.2.105 to 23.0.1.A.5.77. The update is currently rolling for the D6603/D6653 variants of the Xperia Z3 as well as the D5803/D5833 Xperia Z3 Compact variants.

Sony has not released the changelog for this new Android 4.4.4 KitKat software build, but we are told it includes the Portrait Retouch mode for the camera (as in the Xperia C3), plus a slightly newer version of the home launcher. However, we haven’t verified this for ourselves. If you have downloaded the update, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

SW3Google recently released the Lollipop update (5.0.1) for Android Wear devices and it is now rolling on the Sony SmartWatch 3. One of the big new improvements in this update is the ability to load new watch faces. The Android Wear app for phones was also updated recently to make switching watch faces more easily. Click here for a selection of free and premium watch faces curated by Google.

The Lollipop SW3 update can be downloaded by anyone running a phone with Android 4.3 and above. The update is being pushed by Google so you will have to wait for it to hit over-the-air (OTA). Alternatively you can try to load the software manually via the OTA zip file, click the source link for the download info.

2014 Xperia AOSPSony has added AOSP (Android Open Source Project) for a few more handsets today, which means that it covers all Qualcomm-based Xperia devices released in 2014. The Xperia E3 and Xperia T3 were added today, whilst the source code for the Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia M2 were also updated to improve stability. SmartWatch 2 updated with new watch faces; “Do not disturb” function and ability to customise app order

SW2 update_2Sony has released a new update for the SmartWatch 2, the first for months, which brings a number of neat new features. The update moves the build number to 1.0.B.6.30/1.0.A.4.11 and with it some new watch faces too. In addition, Sony finally allows users to customise the app order within the SW2’s home screens. This is managed on the phone within the Smart Connect app, allowing you to easily rearrange apps into home screen 1, 2, 3 etc.

Sony now also allows you to choose up to three watch faces that you can swipe between. Finally, given that the SmartWatch 2 has a pretty harsh vibrate function, it’s great to see that it has added a “Do not disturb” feature within the settings. This will be especially handy if you’re in a meeting.

However, one big bug with the update is that it appears to break custom analogue watch faces. Users are complaining that either the date is being displayed incorrectly. Therefore, if you are using a custom watch face, you may want to hang tight for a bug fix.

Sony Smart Connect app updated (Adaptations for Android 5.0): Lollipop coming soon?

Smart Connect_resultSony’s “Smart Connect” application has just received an update with the main changelog being “Adaptations for Android 5.0“. Now we don’t know what this means exactly, the UI is the same, so it’s likely to mean changes to the back-end, getting ready for Android Lollipop. This does highlight that we could start to see the update as soon as we hit 2015.

Sony Mobile’s Twitter account re-confirmed that the Xperia Z2 and Z3 series will be upgraded to Lollipop at the “beginning of 2015″, so hopefully all is on track. We have already seen Lollipop firmware builds being tested so it is probably a matter of weeks now. We’ll keep you posted.
