Xperia Z2_23.2.A.1.62Firmware build number 23.2.A.1.62 recently started to roll for the Xperia Z3 in a few markets. The D6603 variant saw the update roll for Vodafone Germany and Vodafone Spain, whilst the update hit the D6653 variant in Hong Kong (as well as for Singtel and Starhub in Singapore).

The same update has now been certified for the Xperia Z2 (D6502, D6503) and the Xperia Z2 Tablet (SGP521). At this stage it is unclear, whether we will see this update roll globally or not. Recently, build number 23.1.A.1.28 started to hit most of the Xperia Z2, Z3 series with a number of bug-fixing updates.

Android 5.1 coming to Xperia Z series in August says Telstra

Android 5.1Android 5.1 Lollipop is scheduled to land in August 2015 for the Sony Xperia Z series according to Australian carrier Telstra. In its latest “Software Updates” roadmap, Telstra has listed three Xperia Z series devices (Xperia Z, Z1 and Z1 Compact) for the update. Telstra says that a test submission was received on 1 May but that a “showstopper issue” was identified. A new submission is now expected on 10 July.

Generally speaking, we expect that generic devices would receive the update before carriers so the wait for Android 5.1 on Xperia may be shorter than August. However, it is unlikely to be significantly earlier. Judging by the “showstopper issue”, it sounds like it won’t land before July at the earliest. Is this later than you expected? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Xperia Z1s LollipopAndroid 5.0.2 Lollipop has been certified for the Xperia Z3 (D6616) for T-Mobile US in the form of build number 23.1.C.0.381. This compares with the current firmware build of 23.0.D.1.123 – the move from 23.0 to a 23.1 build number suggests this will be the Lollipop update.

Only recently there were suggestions that the Android Lollipop update could take months, however there is every chance that this isn’t the final Lollipop build for rollout. In the past, we have seen numerous certifications before an update is released for certain models. Either way, we’ll take this news over no activity at all. We’ll bring you further news as we have it.

The likelihood is that the update brings the same new bug-fixing features found in the recent update for the Xperia Z2/Z3 series, along with the new clear all button for recent apps. We’ll let you know once it starts to roll.

Xperia Z3 (D6616)_23.1.C.0.385Just recently we saw Android 5.0.2 Lollipop certified for the T-Mobile Xperia Z3 (D6616). We did say at the time, that there was every chance this was not the final build and subsequent certifications were a good possibility. Well this is what we see do as Lollipop build number 23.1.C.0.385 has been certified by the PTCRB versus 23.1.C.0.381 previously. If this ends up being the final build we’ll let you know when it starts to roll.

Sony Mobile has released an update to for the SmartWatch 2 SW2 which brings “functional improvements” to the watch, however there is no clarity on what these improvements are. The new update moves the build number to 1.0.B.6.40 / 1.0.A.4.11.

Xperia Z3 Android 5.1.1 video_7There is no doubt that Sony Mobile is currently testing the latest Android firmware builds on Xperia devices. Recently, we brought news that the Xperia Z series could see Android 5.1 by August, at least on Telstra in Australia. Now a video has appeared, showing what it is believed to be Android 5.1.1 Lollipop running on an Xperia Z3. The video highlights some new features including additional options for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth within the notification menu (as well as new animations) and new icons within the settings menu.

New Android 5.1 firmware builds for Xperia devices have also appeared on the Handset Detection website, pointing to a release build with a build template of 23.4.A.0.XXX – at least for the Xperia Z2/Z3 series. Build numbers 23.4.A.0.279 and 23.4.A.0.248 have been spotted.

Whilst the build number is not revealed, the “About phone” screen does appear to show that the handset is running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. One of the new changes includes a drop-down box on the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles within the notification menu.

This allows you to directly access a different wireless network or pair a Bluetooth device straight from the notification menu.

The main other change in the video is that all of the icons within the settings menu have now changed to bringer a flatter, brighter option – more in line with Google’s material design guidelines.

More details on Recovery mode for select Xperia devices

Recovery_Phone_smallRecently, we brought word that Sony Mobile had started to officially support recovery mode within its bootloaders. Recovery mode can be very helpful for those wanting to flash custom ROMs and restoring back-up data. It also allows users to test new (and potentially unstable) kernels with the comfort of moving back to a stable kernel.

Recovery mode is already available for a number of devices through Sony’s version of Flash tool (unlocked bootloader is required). This includes the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia E3, Xperia M2, Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia T3. More device support is expected in due course.

For further details hit the source link below. It’s great to see Sony continuing its strong support on the developer scene. Karl-Johan Dahlström, Head of Developer Relations, had this to say: “Our overall goal with the open device program is to offer a development environment similar to the one for Nexus devices. Now, by making it much easier to debug, we hope this will further encourage innovation and kernel development on Xperia devices”.

Xperia Z3 T-Mobile TestingIf the recent PTCRB certifications of Android 5.0 Lollipop on the Xperia Z3 weren’t enough of a clue that T-Mobile was testing the firmware, then you can now hear the information directly from the horse’s mouth.

T-Mobile’s software updates page lists both the Xperia Z3 (D6616) and Xperia Z1s (C6916) as “T-Mobile Testing Software Version: Android 5.0 Lollipop“. Back in March, both handsets were at the “Manufacturer Development” stage.

Xperia Z3 owners will also see LTE Band 12 (700 MHz) support with this update. T-Mobile says that this support will be added via a “software update coming May 2015”. Therefore there is every chance that Lollipop is just around the corner, well at least for the T-Mobile Xperia Z3.

2015-05-20 12.22.06A new Android 5.0.2 Lollipop firmware update for the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra will start to roll today according to Sony. The new update will move the build number from 14.5.A.0.242 to version 14.5.A.0.270.

The update is currently only live on Telus Canada for the C6906 variant only, but it should start seeding for the other Xperia Z1 variants shortly (along with the Z1 Compact and Z Ultra). A number of people have received emails from Sony regarding this update over the last 12 hours or so, so it should be too long before it rolls.

The changelog should echo what was seen with the other bug-fixing Lollipop updates that were released for the Xperia Z2/Z3 recently. See below for details. Once you get the update, please don’t hesitate to post some pictures and impressions in the comments below.

Xperia Z1 update (14.5.A.0.270) changelog

– Ensured the lock screen / notification bar doesn’t indicate “no service” when the device has coverage
– Added a Sony feature; bringing back the “close-all-button” in the activity menu, so you can easily close all apps at once
– Unblocked devices with server policies (such as Exchange Active Sync for e-mail), to enable the new Lollipop lock-screen notifications
– Ensured the LED light is lit across all sound modes – and no longer offset by “silent”
– Made the necessary fixes to enable the easy movement of content from internal memory to external microSD card (something we saw affecting a few devices)
– Improved messaging functionality in Ultra stamina mode – some conversations could not be opened before in Ultra stamina mode

Could Android Lollipop be heading to the Xperia T3? [Update]

$

Xperia T3Sony Mobile has done a great job with the Android Lollipop rollout so far, releasing the update for all of the Xperia Z series along with a couple of mid-rangers such as the Xperia C3 and T2 Ultra. However, there are at least a couple of 2014 Sony Xperia models, where the owners probably feel they also deserve the update. This includes the Xperia M2 series and the Xperia T3.

With regards to the latter, Sony Mobile France claims that Lollipop will be arriving “in the following weeks.” Sony’s social media teams aren’t always correct when it comes to updates such as these, so don’t take it as a guarantee but it offers hope nonetheless.

Update: Sony Xperia France has now deleted the tweet, citing that it was a mistake. [Thanks Sergio!]
