This new update brings Wi-Fi support that means the watch will be able to carry on getting notifications, even if it is not connected to your phone via Bluetooth. It also includes ‘always-on’ apps (apps stay visible as long as you need them), easy to draw emoji and changes to the launcher so that contacts/apps are only a swipe away. CM12.1Official Sony support for the Xperia M (C1904, C1905) might have ended a while back, but the handset lives on thanks to the developer community. Well if you own the handset you might be pleased to hear that official CM 12.1 nightly builds have landed for the device – this means Android 5.1 support. This is down to XDA developer PecanCM who has done the hard graft in getting these builds live. Head over to the CyanogenMod website and look for code name “nicki” to download the latest CM12.1 nightly build.

FlashTool_XperiFirm integrationTwo of the most essential utilities for any Sony Xperia owner are Flashtool and XperiFirm. The combination of both of these tools allows any user to download, install and check firmware for any region and any variant of Sony Xperia device. The good news is that XperiFirm has now been integrated into the latest release of Flashtool.

Whilst the build number has not changed, the re-release of Flashtool version 0.9.18.5 includes an XperiFirm button that launches the program. It also means users now don’t have to manually delete the fwinfo.xml file that was causing errors when creating FTF firmware files. You can download the latest release over at the Flashtool website.

Xperia Z2_23.2.A.1.62Firmware build version 23.2.A.1.62 saw a limited roll out across select regions and carriers for the Xperia Z3 series around a month ago. Now the same build number is hitting the Xperia Z2 (D6503 variant only). The update is currently hitting T-Mobile across a number of different European countries including Austria, Germany and Netherlands. Whilst we haven’t seen an official changelog for this version, it is rumoured to add VoLTE. We do not expect this firmware build to roll globally.

Update: The firmware build is also live for the Xperia Z2 Tablet LTE (SGP521) across the same carriers/regions.

au and docomo announce Sony Xperia devices to get Lollipop in Japan

Android LollipopTwo Japanese carriers, NTT docomo and au by KDDI, have announced their OS schedule and with it, which Sony Xperia devices they plan to update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Unlike the global rollout, the only Xperia Z users that will see Lollipop in Japan are those carrying an Xperia Z2 or Z3 series device. There is no timeline on when Lollipop will roll out for these models.

Therefore Xperia Z, Z1, Z1 f, Z Ultra and Tablet Z owners are out of luck. Let’s not forget the other models outside of the Z series in Japan like the Xperia A, A2 and UL. This is the issue with carrier devices, updates are at the whim of the operator. Makes us appreciate Sony updating the entire Xperia Z line to Lollipop even more.

LollipopSony Mobile has just announced that Android 5.1 Lollipop will start rolling to all of the Xperia Z series as well as the Xperia C3 and T2 Ultra from July 2015. Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua owners will not be left out in the cold – Sony has officially confirmed that these handsets will be upgraded directly to Android 5.1, which is fantastic news. The update for the Xperia M2 series will start after Android 5.1 has rolled to the Xperia Z series, but we’re sure M2 owners won’t mind given this very good news.

Thanks Omar!
